TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida’s top doctor wants Floridians to remain active during the hot summer months, a continuation of the state’s wellness approach to human health.

“As the summer months bring hotter temperatures, swimming is a great way to stay cool and get a workout in! You don’t have to be a pro to get started. Your local pool will be just fine,” said Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, alongside a video of him swimming in a local pool.

Christina Pushaw, a member of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration, praised Ladapo’s encouragement as the better alternative to “ideologically driven social engineering.”

Ladapo has been under fire for years over his criticism of the COVID-19 vaccine, especially in regard to its use among young, healthy males. The surgeon general has been touting the benefits of staying fit throughout his tenure.

Ladapo was reconfirmed as surgeon general last year.

His public health messaging dates back years under an initiative called “Healthier You,” launched by the Florida Department of Health, emphasizing diet and exercise.

Ladapo was originally appointed in 2021.
