FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Broward County School Board member Torey Alston, appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, recently announced his run for election in District 2 by prioritizing keeping children first.

“I am thrilled by the overwhelming bi-partisan support of our leaders supporting my campaign to keep my seat on the Broward School Board,” Alston told Florida’s Voice. “The voters want an experienced public servant who is independent minded, will make tough decisions and keep our children first.”

Alston outlined three main priorities to his campaign:

  • Academic excellence for all children
  • Keeping children safe in school
  • Protecting tax dollars through fiscal responsibility

“I am running to continue promoting 100% proficiency of all students and protecting our tax dollars through fiscal responsibility as we manage a $6 billion enterprise in the nation’s 6th largest school district,” Alston said.

Alston was first appointed by DeSantis to the Broward County School Board in August 2022. A product of the district’s school system, Alston graduated from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and is a 4th generation member of the New Mount Olive Baptist Church.

He also touted a number of accomplishments since serving on the board. They include establishing a he said will be a “new visionary focus” for Broward schools to become an “A” district with a concentration on 100% proficiency of all students.

In December, the Florida Department of Education assessed Broward County Public Schools a “B” grade for the 2022-2023 school year.

In addition, Alston helped pass the Fiscal Year 2022-2023 budget, which included the lowest millage rate in 15 years. Specifically, the budget focused on student achievement, safety and compensation for both instructional and non-instructional employees.

Under Alston’s tenure, the board also approved an $8 million Saturday School Tutoring Initiative, which targets underperforming 3rd, 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th grade students. Moreover, Alston helped to pass another $8 million in allocated funds following an economic downturn to relieve Broward Families and School Sites, an action left untaken for 15 years.

Furthermore, Alston detailed his support for a one-time $7500 incentive for law enforcement personnel. He also noted the ceasing of legal payments after Aug. 26, 2022 to suspended School Board Members listed in the grand jury report.

Alston will face-off against Rebecca Thompson in District 2 in November’s election. The area covers Southwest Ranches and portions of Cooper City, Davie, Miramar, and Pembroke Pines.
