TALLAHASSEE (FLV) – Gov. Ron DeSantis announced $4.2 million has been awarded to improve the main access road for the Southwest Florida International Airport.

“Currently, the poor condition of Chamberlin Parkway is restricting access to commercial development sites on the north side of the airport and stunting new business growth,” DeSantis said.

The new project will improve commercial development sites so new businesses can move to the area and have access to the airport terminal. DeSantis said the project’s estimated economic impact is more than $16 million and will support 3,800 total jobs in the Southwest Florida area.

Southwest Florida International Airport served more than 10.3 million passengers in 2021 and moved more than 41 million pounds of freight. It is one of the top 50 U.S. airports for passenger traffic.

The $4.2 million award goes to the Lee County Port Authority through the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund.

“Since July 2021, my administration has invested $87 million in Florida communities through the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund to support projects that make strong impacts,” DeSantis said. “These investments support future growth for Florida communities and create new opportunities for residents.”
