SANIBEL (FLV) – The controversial transgender-themed children’s books will stay in the children’s section of the Sanibel Public Library after the library board held several meetings on how to handle the backlash the books received.

Florida’s Voice first reported in June the outrage parents felt to find gender transitioning children’s books at the public library. The books shared stories of young kids choosing whether they could be a boy or a girl.

Since then, those for and against the books have packed the Sanibel Public Library Board of Commissioners meetings. Some wanted the books out of the children’s section while others said the books should remain.

The board decided not to make drastic changes to the library’s policy, which the chair said is purposefully kept broad to avoid censorship. The policy states the library does “not serve as a censor of the reading” of any community member and that the library does not endorse opinions and does not label materials to make value judgements.

“Responsibility for Library materials use by minors rests with their parents or guardians,” the policy also states. “Selection of adult material will not be restricted by the possibility that these materials may come into the possession of minors.”

The board decided to keep the general policy intact but add language clarifying that the books would stay on the shelves during the review process if they are challenged.

Sanibel Public Library District Executive Director Margaret Mohundro said staff will update their procedures and policies.

Those who have questions about a book or want a book removed are required to fill out a reconsideration form. Mohundro said staff will update the form to make it more easily-understandable. Library staff would review the form to determine what steps should be taken. If the person is not satisfied with staff’s decision, they can appeal to the board of commissioners.

Certain books in the youth section will be labeled as having “companion” books in the adult section. For example, Mohundro said transgender kid books will have a label that says “a companion book is available in the adult section.”

When it comes to displays, library staff said they would hold more board meetings to discuss which displays should be put up.

Mohundro said the board did consider relocating books to other shelves and removing books from shelves but said they were not doable, practical or violated the policy and continued to further censorship.

One book found in the library labeled “My Own Way” tells students they can be a boy, girl, both, or none of them.

Another book in the library tells the story of a young girl named Jackie who does not like dresses, so Jackie’s mom allows her to wear “whatever feels right” and cuts Jackie’s hair. The story goes on to share how Jackie changes her name to “Jack” and tells her sister she is now a “brother” instead of a sister.
