BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey tossed his support behind former Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos in his congressional bid for District 8.

Haridopolos kicked off his campaign in April to coincide with incumbent Republican Rep. Bill Posey opting to retire and backing Haridopolos.

“I have known Mike for many years and have watched him serve our community and state as a member of the Florida Senate and eventually as the Senate President,” Ivey said. “Mike, like I do[es] [understand] that government’s one and only responsibility is to protect it’s citizens and as such, has a proven track record of standing up for law and order!”

“He loves Brevard County and our first responders and he is exactly what we as a community need to start sending to Washington,” he said.

Ivey added that Haridopolos will be a great successor to outgoing Posey and will represent conservative values in D.C.

“Mike has always stood strong as a Shepherd of our taxpayer dollars and will use his vast experience to make sound decisions that are in the best interest of America,” Ivey said.

The district covers Brevard, Indian River and part of Orange County.

Haridopolos served as president of the Senate from 2010 to 2012.

Other figures quickly endorsed Haridopolos for Congress when it became public he’d be running to replace Posey, such as Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis and more.

Two other Republicans have qualified for District 8: Joe Babits and John Hearton.

Two Democrats have qualified as well: Sandy Kennedy and Daniel McDow.

In 2022, Posey won the seat by nearly 30 points.
