FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (FLV) – Broward Republican Party Chairman Tom Powers resigned, effectively immediately, due to ongoing health concerns related to cancer.

In his resignation letter, Powers said he has battled cancer since early 2021.

“I have fought as hard as I can fight, but in recent months my health has deteriorated quicker than I expected. I would prefer to spend the moments I have left with my family,” Powers said.

“Our party deserves dedicated leadership. I have given it my all and now it’s time to pass the baton to the next generation of leadership,” he said.

“I am proud of Chairman Powers for waking up every day and fighting — both cancer and the Democrats. I’ve worked for no greater leader and had no greater friend,” said Lauren Cooley, Broward GOP executive director.

Local leaders, including Rep. Chip LaMarca, R-Lighthouse Point, expressed gratitude for Powers’ service.

“Sometimes in life we’re just lucky to have good people stand up to serve. I am lucky to be bale to call Chairman @flpowers a friend,” LaMarca said.

According to the letter, Powers mentored others to be his successor over the past year. He asked readers to support Abby Stafford as Broward Republican Party chairwoman.

“She has the leadership skills, grassroots know-how, and connections to our donors to carry this organization forward as we rapidly approach such a critical election year,” Powers said.

“We have great people who can do this job and will do this job for the right reasons. I just ask you to give them the opportunity to succeed by rallying behind them,” he said.

With his resignation, Powers delegated his duties to Vice Chair Chris Marino on an interim basis. Marino will serve in an interim role until an election is called, which is to be determined.

“I want to thank my family for allowing me to spend the last years of my life fully immersed in politics. I want to thank the number of people that I have met along the way and grown to know as friends, who helped turn the Broward GOP into the successful organization it is today,” Powers said.
