SAINT PETERSBURG (FLV) – In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian ramming through Southwest Florida into the rest of the state, Democrat Charlie Crist used it as an opportunity to raise campaign funds.

On social media, the Democrat bidding to defeat Gov. Ron DeSantis in November is asking victims of Ian to “Share your story: Florida Property Insurance.”

“If you have paid thousands in premiums under Ron DeSantis, only to have your home insurance coverage not be there for you when you need it most, we want to hear your story,” he tweeted.

The link brings users to Crist’s campaign website, prompting potential victims of Ian to share hardships dealing with the tumultuous insurance market. The responses can be named or anonymous, must include a zip code and email, and optional remarks or descriptions.

“If you suffered damage from Hurricane Ian and have recently been dropped from your insurance, or if the property insurance crisis has impacted you and your family in any other way, we want to hear your story,” it says. When the form is submitted to the Crist campaign, though, the user is promptly asked to donate money: “Now, if you’re able, can you take the next step and make a quick donation?

Florida’s Voice asked the Crist campaign for explanation and will include their response if they reply.
