HOLLYWOOD (FLV) – Florida’s Voice obtained information from a Broward County resident on a Saturday Democrat canvassing event featuring Lt. Gov. candidate Karla Hernandez-Mats, running alongside Charlie Crist, telling volunteers to wear masks at the “sunscreen” recommended event.

“Join us for a canvass in Hollywood or Hallandale Beach to talk with your neighbors about electing Democrats up and down the ballot in 2022!” they say. Hernandez-Mats is supposed to arrive at 1 P.M. to “welcome back the first shift of canvassers and send off the second group.”

Anna Fusco, current President of the Broward Teachers Union, told those planning to canvas with the Florida Democrats to “plan to wear a face mask that snugly covers your nose and mouth and comfortable walking shoes.”

“Don’t forget the sunscreen!” she said.

At the outdoor mask-required event on Saturday, Broward County’s high temperature is expected to be around 93 degrees.

Hernandez-Mats was a frequent advocate for school lockdowns and mantes. The DeSantis campaign pounced on Crist’s pick, saying she is for “mandates, lockdowns, school closures.”

She previously tweeted a picture depicting residents and parents at school board meetings as violent and armed.

Hernandez-Mats is the president of United Teachers of Dade, which is a teachers union in Miami. She Tweeted a picture of various famous horror characters in costumes with chainsaws and blades saying they are “going to a school board meeting.”

The tweet is from October 21, 2021 with the hashtag “antivaxxers.”

“For any of you following the school board meetings, you know that the craziness is real,” Mats said. “God be with us.”

A month prior to that tweet, in September of 2021, the National School Boards Association sent a letter to President Joe Biden expressing concern over parents’ frustrations with lockdowns, school closures, mandates, and other hot-button issues that plagued schools coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The letter from the NSBA compared parents to “domestic terrorists.”

Crist has previously received support from the American Federation of Teachers. He praised the $500,000 donation from the teachers union. The union’s president is Randi Weingarten, who has said that making vaccines mandatory for students is something she supports.

Hernandez-Mats was the President of United Teachers of Dade in May of 2020, when Gov. Ron DeSantis lifted restrictions on all youth activities, including summer camps and organized sports. United Teachers of Dade criticized the governor’s decision.
