MIAMI (FLV) – Charlie Crist’s running mate, Karla Hernandez-Mats, said in a previous MSNBC interview that Florida’s plan to recruit veterans to the classrooms is “deprofessionalizing” teacher careers.

“This is them deprofessionalizing our careers,” Hernandez-Mats said. “Teachers have gone to school for four years. They have their bachelor’s, they have masters, they have doctoral degrees.”

“And to think that somebody that has four years of combat experience would do well in our schools, is actually very disrespectful to our, to our educators to our teachers, and not the way you support them.”

Florida lawmakers unanimously approved a plan to recruit more teachers. The plan allows qualified veterans to temporarily teach until they earn their bachelor’s degree. Requirements include:

– Minimum of 48 months of military service with an honorable/medical discharge
– Minimum of 60 college credits with a 2.5 grade point average
– Passing score on a Florida subject area examination
– Employment in a Florida school district, including charter schools
– Cleared background screening

The veteran could receive a five year temporary teaching certificate. The veterans would have a mentor teacher for a minimum of two years.

The “DeSantis War Room” Twitter account posted the video of Hernandez-Mats’ comments.

“Florida is leading the way by bringing some of the best, the brightest, and the bravest among us into our classrooms through a new program that helps military veterans become teachers,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said earlier this month.
