TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (FLV) – Gov. Ron DeSantis slammed President Joe Biden as “weak” in response to reports of China paying to construct a secret spy base in Cuba to target the United States.

“China is growing its worldwide influence because Joe Biden is weak,” he said.

According to the Wall Street Journal, a “secret agreement” was reached between Cuba and China to eavesdrop on the U.S. from the island country.

It reportedly costed China several billion dollars and resides just around 100 miles from Florida.

The base will also allow China to eavesdrop on communications in southern parts of the U.S.

“Joe Biden and his administration’s feckless foreign policy emboldens the CCP around the globe—seeking platitudes while Xi inks a deal for Chinese intelligence and military access in America’s backyard,” DeSantis continued. “Biden’s refusal to secure our border has allowed Chinese-produced fentanyl to kill our children.”

“And recently, Biden allowed a Chinese spy balloon to fly over the United States with zero consequences for Beijing,” he said.

“America’s national interests are not advanced through performative diplomacy.”

DeSantis’ presidential campaign pointed to the governor’s actions against the Chinese Communist Party and their influence in Florida.

In May, DeSantis signed bills into law banning CCP land ownership in Florida along with cracking down on their influence in higher education.

“Our food security is also national security and so we don’t want the CCP in charge of any food production,” DeSantis said.

“We really need to have a unified effort in this country to deter the CCPs ambitions and their influence and part of that is asserting our economic sovereignty,” he said.

His campaign also pointed to his book, The Courage to Be Free, where he wrote that the CCP concealed the true origins of COVID-19 and slammed the notion that the U.S. be dependent on China for vital medical supplies.

DeSantis recently called Chinese President Xi Jinping “very ideological” in building up a military and aiming to exert influence.

“He wants to project that beyond China’s borders in a much bigger way. And I think what makes them a significant threat is they’ve been able to make themselves, partially because U.S. policy facilitated this, the biggest industrial power in the world,” he said.

His campaign pointed to DeSantis’ time as a U.S. congressman, cosponsoring multiple pieces of legislation taking a “strong stance” against China, including supporting Taiwan, condemning organ harvesting in China and more.
