FORT MYERS (FLV) – Tuesday, Gov. Ron DeSantis held a press conference and commented on the leaked decision from the Supreme Court overturning pro-abortion court case Roe v. Wade.

DeSantis noted that Florida recently signed the strongest pro-life protections in decades, banning abortion in nearly all cases after 15 weeks.

“At the end of the day, it’s a mistake to read the federal constitution to completely prohibit any pro-life protections – that’s not consistent with the text history structure,” he remarked.

DeSantis had strong words for the leaker of Justice Samuel Alito’s majority Court opinion:

“To have that leak out the way it did was really unprecedented and I think it was really an attack on a lot of the justices. I think it was an intentional thing to try to whip up a lot of the public to try to make it very political, potentially try to bully them into changing one of their positions – and that is not something that’s appropriate for the judicial branch.”

“They need to figure out who did that, and they need to hold them accountable because that’s a real, significant breach of trust,” he went on.

You wanna talk about an insurrection? You know, that’s a judicial insurrection to be taking that out and trying to kneecap a potential majority through extraconstitutional means.”

When asked by a reporter what he wants to see done on the issue of abortion in Florida, DeSantis said that he “believes in pro-life protections.”

“I think it’s something that’s based in science,” he said.

DeSantis went after Democrat states that allow abortion up to the point of birth: “I’m just thinking to myself – how is that something that would ever be viewed to be appropriate?”

“The U.S. is more in line with countries like China and North Korea than it is with typical European countries that are more, even, social democracies that we could consider to be more left-leaning, and yet they have much more protections.

DeSantis noted that the 15 week abortion law will have to overcome additional state-level caselaw and that overturning Roe would not be an automatic victory for the state’s new pro-life law.
