TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Gov. Ron DeSantis celebrated more than 200 Americans successfully being rescued from Haiti thanks to the state’s efforts to help U.S. citizens in the war torn country.

The governor also bashed the federal government for their inability to act and aid in the issue.

“When Floridians and other Americans are in need, the State of Florida acts,” DeSantis said. “I’m pleased to announce that we’ve been able to successfully rescue more than 200 Floridians and other Americans from Haiti. Even when the federal government fails to act, Florida will always step up.”

According to the governor’s office, a total of 220 Americans have been rescued from Haiti, since March 20.

Florida Division of Emergency Management Executive Director Kevin Guthrie echoed DeSantis’ support for the operation.

“Being able to support our residents in this time of crisis is because of Governor DeSantis’ leadership and the collaboration between our state agencies and private and nonprofit partners,” he said.

“I am proud of the State Emergency Response Team for working around the clock to coordinate these emergency flights and get Floridians home safely,” Guthrie added.

The division reported that 95% of the rescues have been Floridians, and that no individuals rescued are ever charged for their flights.

They also provide countless free resources to those escaping, including meals, lodging, transportation, childcare resources and technology such as phones, charging stations and SIM cards.

Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla., also personally help rescue several people from Haiti after further conflicts broke out in the island nation.
