YANKEETOWN, Fla. (FLV) – Gov. Ron DeSantis criticized the “corporate media” for being “incurious” about the Maui wildfire disaster.

“Look, I think the Maui is a total catastrophe,” DeSantis said at a weekend press conference. “I don’t think we have all the answers to that. I think we should have all the answers to that.”

“It’s interesting how incurious our corporate media is about what happened in Maui,” DeSantis said. “I mean, I don’t see them interviewing parents who can’t find their kids, but we know there’s a lot of people missing.”

He continued, saying the “heartbreaking” stories are not being “publicized” enough.

The Biden administration has also been responding to the wildfires in Maui, Hawaii, which began in early August. That disaster’s death toll sits at around 115 as the fires become more contained.

DeSantis sent some Florida assistance to Maui in mid-August.

Contrasting the disaster to Hurricane Idalia, he said that Florida was “prepared” for the disaster, and is not relying on the federal government for relief, even though the U.S. government helps serve as a “checkbook.”

“Disaster response is really bottom up,” DeSantis said. “The people in the communities know – when you’re in Cedar Key and they’re talking about evacuating in the light of the storm – it’s not the federal government doing it.”

“The checkbook from the feds is great, and we’re going – whatever resources are available – as the governor, I’m going to pull those levers to be able to help Floridians,” he said. “But we’re certainly not relying on the federal government to do the day-to-day heavy lifting.”

DeSantis also commented on climate change over the weekend, saying it’s a “lie” to blame man-made climate change and advocate for left-wing federal policies to prevent strong hurricanes.
