MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Monday he plans to work with lawmakers to crack down on those sleeping and camping in public streets, sidewalks and parks, along with a slew of other proposals.

Sen. Jonathan Martin, R-Fort Myers, is the sponsor of current legislation that cracks down on unauthorized public camping and sleeping.

Rep. Sam Garrison, R-Fleming Island, is the sponsor of the House version.

DeSantis referenced San Francisco’s homeless problem, and spoke in front of a sign that said, “don’t allow Florida to become San Francisco.”

“We want to [offer] support,” he said. “It’s got to be done ways focused primary on ensuring public order, ensuring quality of life for residents, ensuring that people’s property values are maintained.”

The governor said he’s unclear if there is a “final” product proposed yet that covers all of his proposals.

DeSantis said he’s “open” to giving financial support for shelter and mental health treatment for the homeless population.

The governor also wants provisions that law enforcement ensure local governments comply with the restrictions.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Mark Glass joined the governor, along with other members of law enforcement.

Martin said his bill would also authorize cities and counties to designate specific areas for public sleeping or public camping under certain conditions, such as providing access to clean restrooms.

“Instead of criminalizing the homeless, this bill authorizes individuals and businesses to seek a private right of action against cities or counties that do not follow the law,” Martin said.
