TALAHASSEE, Fla. – Gov. Ron Desantis bashed Columbia University for having “capitulated” to pro-Hamas protestors by canceling spring commencement ceremonies.

DeSanits’ office also celebrated the effort by all college and university presidents in Florida for keeping each schools’ ceremony on schedule, regardless of protester threats.

“It’s sad and pathetic that Columbia University canceled their university-wide commencement because of the out-of-control pro-Hamas protests,” DeSantis said on social media.

“Last week, I directed Florida’s Colleges and Universities to ensure commencements were not canceled or disrupted,” he said. “Our students deserve that, and we champion law and order in Florida.”

Bryan Griffin, DeSantis’ communications director, expressed how it was “pathetic” that Columbia “capitulated” to the protestors.

“This is a symptom of weak university and state leadership,” he said.

In a letter addressed to all college and university presidents, State University System of Florida Chancellor Ray Rodrigues commended the schools on their work to combat antisemitism and protect Jewish students.

“While we are witnessing a descent into chaos all over the country, under the leadership or Governor Ron Desantis, Florida has maintained aw and order,” he said. “As the academic year concludes, we must protect the integrity of our commencement ceremonies and ensure the safety of our students.”

Colombia announced that instead of a normal school-wide celebration, graduating seniors would be able to participate in “smaller-scale, school-based celebrations.”

“As a result, we will focus our resources on those school ceremonies and on keeping them safe, respectful, and running smoothly,” the school said in a statement.

During the last weeks of the spring semester, Columbia found itself engulfed in student protests and activist encampments that were set up around the school. The activism, seen on many campuses across the country, disrupted classes and the normal day-to-day operations of universities.
