TALLAHASSEE (FLV) – Gov. Ron DeSantis Friday said he is proud to support restoring the iconic Freedom Tower in Miami as people celebrate Cuban Independence Day.

“This Cuban Independence Day, we are proud to recognize the Freedom Tower and the funding we secured to restore it to its former glory,” DeSantis said.

The Governor announced earlier this month that he supports $25 million in his proposed budget to restore the historic Miami building. The project will include structural repairs and museum-quality features.

“It is a symbol of Florida’s commitment to the people of Cuba and those across the world who are seeking freedom from oppression,” DeSantis said.

Many Cubans fled from communist regimes to Florida to receive assistance at the Freedom Tower in Miami.

“This tower is a reminder that freedom is not free. That you have to fight for your rights,” DeSantis said earlier this month. “There are a lot of people out there that would love nothing more than to put you under some form of oppression.”

Earlier in May, the Governor signed legislation at the Freedom Tower proclaiming November 7th as “Victims of Communism Day.” The law requires Florida high school students to learn about communist regimes and the “evils” perpetuated by those leaders.

On Tuesday, DeSantis slammed the Biden Administration for their plan to remove flight rules on Cuba and loosen remittance.

“Biden’s plan to prop up the Cuban dictatorship represents yet another failure when it comes to standing for freedom in our hemisphere,” DeSantis said on Twitter

A series of protests from Cubans broke out against their government last July because of the food shortages and the economic crisis on the island. Some protesters were jailed for up to 30 years.
