TALLAHASSEE (FLV) – Gov. Ron DeSantis offered his condolences to the family of Deputy Michael Hartwick who was killed in a hit-and-run crash in a construction zone on I-275 in St. Petersburg on Thursday evening.

First Lady Casey DeSantis also offered her condolences, saying:

“Heartbroken to learn of the death of Deputy Michael Hartwick who was killed in the line of duty yesterday evening as a result of a hit and run crash. Sending prayers to his family and loved ones, including @SheriffPinellas. Glad to see the suspect has been taken into custody.”

AP News reports Hartwick was providing safety in a construction zone and was standing on the road’s shoulder when he was struck by a front end loader traveling at about 20 mph.

35-year-old Victor Vazquez-Real fled the scene, but was arrested early Friday according to Sheriff Bob Gualtieri.

A procession is set for Friday afternoon from the Medical Examiner’s Office to the Thomas B. Dobies Funeral Home in Tarpon Springs.
