TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation on Monday increasing penalties for street racing and street takeovers.

The bill, SB 1764, defines the term “coordinated street takeover” to mean 10 or more vehicles operated in an organized manner to effect a street takeover.

The legislation increases the fines for illegal street racing activity, potentially costing individuals up to $1,000.

It increases the penalty for a second violation within one year from a first degree misdemeanor to a third degree felony. Subsequent violations would be subject to harsher penalties.

Those caught spectating the illegal activity may also find themselves paying up to $400 in fines.

Sen. Jason Pizzo, D-Hollywood, sponsored the bill and Reps. Kiyan Michael, R-Jacksonville, and Doug Bankson, R-Apopka, filed the House companion.

The Senate passed the bill unanimously and the House passed it 106-2, with Reps. Michele Rayner, D-St. Petersburg, and Dianne Hart, D-Tampa, voting against it.

The legislation is set to go into effect on July 1.
