TALLAHASSEE (FLV) – Gov. Ron DeSantis criticized Democrats for comparing Cuban refugees to drug cartels who are illegally entering the United States.

“I think it’s just bizarre that they’re trying to equate people that fled communism from Cuba under things like the Cuban Adjustment Act and Pedro pawn to someone running drugs across the southern border. How dare they make that comparison?” said DeSantis.

The governor’s response comes after Democrat Nikki Fried criticized Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez for comments she made on WURN, a Spanish language radio station. Nuñez talked about busing illegal immigrants to other states like Delaware.

DeSantis said, “Jeanette was talking about refugees. It applies to people illegally crossing the southern border who want to come to Florida or who come to Florida because a lot of them say they want to. And if they’re here illegally, then that’s a much different thing than being a refugee. So it does not apply to refugees.”

DeSantis previously said he would reroute illegal illegal immigrants to President Joe Biden’s home state of Delaware if they are bussed to Florida.

Nuñez supports the governor’s remarks: “The crisis at our border is something affecting the entire nation, including the Sunshine State. And although states do not have jurisdiction over immigration, we do have jurisdiction over the well-being of our residents.”

The governor threw shade on Democrat candidate for governor Charlie Crist’s running mate, Karla Hernandez-Mats, for a tweet citing “mourn” for Fidel Castro.

Yes, when you’re putting out tweets saying about Castro’s death, he’s just a political leader that people in Cuba are mourning, that’s a disgrace. That’s an insult to the people in this community who have had to flee that tyranny. It’s an insult to the people that have seen that island destroyed. And here we are decades and decades later, and it is a third-world country has so much potential. And you look at the contrast between South Florida and Cuba. I don’t see people getting on rafts to go from Key West to Cuba. I’ve never seen that. I know they want to do that the opposite because they understand how important freedom is.
