HARDEE COUNTY (FLV) – Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk donated Starlink satellite kits to help some areas affected by Hurricane Ian.

“So he’s been repositioning those to be over this part of Florida,” DeSantis said as he held a press conference in Hardee County.

Starlink was created to provide broadband internet in remote and rural locations across the globe.

The governor’s office said the satellites would help families connect with their loved ones. It also would help first responders and Emergency Operation Centers communicate in the field.

The governor said Saturday Musk would donate about 120 kits to help those in the community. As of Saturday in Hardee County, about 12% of customers had had their power restored in Hardee County.

“We’re happy to be able to bring that here and hopefully that will assist with some of that connectivity issues,” DeSantis said. “I know people are working really hard to get all the services back online.”

In a press release, the Governor’s Office said the Starlink units would be distributed to impacted counties.
