JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (FLV) – Duval County Public Schools is forming a committee of parents and community members to reconsider library books and supplemental materials when parents, guardians or community members request reconsideration.

DCPS seeks parents and community members for the “instructional materials reconsideration committee.” Those who want to participate in the committee to review instructional materials used in the county’s classrooms can apply using the applicant survey.

The survey consists of 11 questions and the deadline for survey submission is Friday, Feb. 20 by 5 p.m.

This committee is in addition to the recently passed legislation related to the selection of school library books and instructional materials. The legislation requires all school librarians and media specialists to be trained annually in order to assist them with selecting books that comply with state law requirements.

In coordinance to the recently passed legislation, DCPS has trained certified media specialists who select books being made available to students through the school library, classroom libraries and recommended or assigned grade-level reading lists.

The selection of library media collections will be based on reader interest and support of the state academic standards and aligned to the curriculum and the academic needs of students and faculty. Media specialists will be trained annually on the procedures and selection process of collections and resources, according to their website.
