TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Advocacy groups are planning to bus people to Tallahassee in protest of a bill that would require Floridians to identify on their driver’s license by their biological sex rather than their gender.

Advocacy groups are calling the bill the “Trans Erasure” bill, however the bill sponsor’s, Reps. Doug Bankson, R-Apopka, and Dean Black, R-Jacksonville, call the bill the “compassion and clarity bill.”

Additionally, the bill, HB 1639, will require health care insurers provide a detransition treatment option for people who have participated in sex reassignment surgery.

The bill already passed through its assigned committee stops and will be taken up by the full House chamber on Thursday.

Florida Rising said they will be bussing people in from Jacksonville.

“Join us at the State Capitol THIS WEDNESDAY (2/28/24) to fight for #TransRights!” the post said.

“If you live in #Duval, we’ll be providing transportation from our office,” the post said.

Florida Rising “builds independent political power that centers historically marginalized communities so everyday Floridians shape the future,” according to its website.

A fundraising email from Equality Florida sent out Tuesday said “hundreds of Floridians will arrive in Tallahassee by the busload to protest the multi-year attack on the existence of transgender people.”

Equality Florida is “Florida’s statewide civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community,” according to their website.

The group said they needed over $12,000 to secure four buses.
