WASHINGTON (FLV) – The Heritage Foundation President said the FBI’s raid of Mar-a-Lago is another example of the federal government using law enforcement to “punish” critics.

The FBI raided former president Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home Monday night. Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts said the “D.C. swamp” is making it clear they will use “all the power of the state” to intimidate people who stand in their way.

“The raid on Mar-a-Lago represents yet another example of the federal government weaponizing law enforcement to punish political enemies, silence critics, and send a message to those whom it views as enemies,” Roberts said.

Roberts repeated a similar sentiment from other Republicans who are suspect of the timing as the midterms approach and the Senate passes a bill to hire 87,000 new IRS agents.

“If they think they can treat a former president this way, imagine what they think they can do to the average American. Such actions could only be justified based on overwhelming evidence of wrongdoing,” Roberts said. “The FBI needs to immediately explain its reckless actions and Biden needs to answer the question of whether he ordered this raid.”

The Heritage Foundation promotes policies based on free enterprise, limited government and individual freedom.

Members of the U.S. House and U.S. Senate have called on the Department of Justice and the FBI to release documentation behind the raid.

“When Republicans retake the majority in the Senate, there will be a thorough and aggressive investigation,” U.S. Sen. Rick Scott said. “Everything needs to be on the table for AG Garland, including impeachment if he doesn’t come out today and explain what happened. Today, the nation is watching and we demand answers.”

Minority Leader of the U.S. House, Kevin McCarthy, made similar comments, announcing there would be an investigation if Republicans took back the House.

“I’ve seen enough. The Department of Justice has reached an intolerable state of weaponized politicization,” McCarthy said. “When Republicans take back the House, we will conduct immediate oversight of this department, follow the facts, and leave no stone unturned.”
