CAYO COSTA (FLV) – Hurricane Ian officially made landfall at 3:05 p.m. on Wednesday near Cayo Costa, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Ian is currently a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds at 150 mph.

The storm will continue north east across the peninsula through Thursday. Conditions will continue to deteriorate into tonight with damaging winds, catastrophic flooding, and tornadoes possible, according to the National Weather Service.

Around 3:30 p.m., more 800,000 people were without power across southwest Florida.

The National Hurricane Center said the hurricane made mainland Florida landfall south of Punta Gorda near Pirate Harbor.

More than 40,000 workers are ready to help bring the power back on following the storm. The governor said Wednesday morning he expects millions of people to lose power “no question.”

“And these folks are staged across the state of Florida,” DeSantis said.

176 shelters have been opened including more than 50 special needs shelters. To find a shelter near you, visit: http://FloridaDisaster.org/Shelters.
