FORT MYERS, Fla. (FLV) – Lee County School Board member Jada Langford-Fleming asked the board Tuesday for a different district slogan, explaining that “progressive” does not align with the community.

“Personal, Passionate, Progressive” is the Lee County School District’s slogan.

“I do not feel like it effectively represents the community,” Fleming said at the board meeting. “While, yes, we are passionate and personal, progressive is often associated now with a political ideology and has no place defining our district.”

The slogan is on the district’s printed materials and website. Langford-Fleming wants it changed for the 2023-24 school year.

“None of the words that actually focus on what our top priority is are in our mantra,” she said. “And that is educating students.”

Langford-Fleming deferred to Lee County School District Superintendent Christopher Bernier for the best way to develop a new slogan.

Bernier said board members could have a “deeper dialogue” about the topic when they discuss the strategic plan and scorecards.

“I think that would be the most appropriate place to continue to entertain that particular discussion,” Bernier said.
