TALLAHASSEE (FLV) – Gov. Ron DeSantis announced launching his new book titled The Courage to Be Free in February 2023, and the media was quick to slam the upcoming release, claiming hypocrisy because of Florida’s decisions on banning certain books.

In March, DeSantis signed a bill that requires curriculum transparency, targeting explicit books in schools. This year, he also signed the Parental Rights in Education Act which some activists falsely dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay Bill.” The law prohibits classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in certain lower grade levels.

“In Florida, our parents have every right to be involved in their child’s education. We are not going to let politicians deny parents the right to know what is being taught in our schools. I’m proud to sign this legislation that ensures curriculum transparency,” said DeSantis.

The governor put these bills into action, rejecting and banning certain textbooks and books that push Critical Race Theory, sexual ideology, and sexually explicit materials in schools.

The Recount shared a video, calling DeSantis’ book title The Courage to Be Free hypocritical and said, “When it comes to banning books, Florida comes in second in the U.S. only Texas has banned books more frequently than Florida’s public schools.”

Vanity Fair slammed the book title and called it a “cringeworthy memoir.”

“Not surprisingly, DeSantis and his publisher have chosen to go with the extremely eye-rolling The Courage to Be Free: Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival, which has the distinction of not just being deeply cringeworthy but is also an indication that the book will be filled with lies,” said Vanity Fair.

Author Kim Kelly called out book publisher HarperCollins and DeSantis, naming the governor a “fascist book burner.”

Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival is going on sale Feb. 28, 2023 on DeSantisBook.com.
