MIAMI (FLV) – Miami commissioner Sabina Covo, a Democrat, failed to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the Miami City Commission meeting on Thursday, citing “nervousness.”

The video of the meeting surfaced on Twitter, showing Chairwoman Christine King asking Covo to lead the pledge.

Moments later, King questioned Covo, “You don’t know it?”

The 31-word pledge was recited by those in the meeting, and King is heard joining in at the end.

Covo released a statement on Friday responding to the video and said she was “nervous.”

“Serving the people of Miami is the honor of a lifetime. When you feel a responsibility is that important, nervousness is very normal, and I’m not afraid to admit that I was. The oath and pledge I took to our nation and to the residents of District 2 is clear and I am focused on honoring my promise to get things done for our community. Which is why I am not focused on Twitter Talk – but rather on passing two very important pieces of legislation…” Covo said.

In the 2023 special general election for Miami Board of Commissioners District 2 in February, Covo received 29% of the vote. Eddy Leal came in second with 21% of the vote.

13 total candidates were on the ballot for the nonpartisan race.

Covo was endorsed by former state Sen. Annette Taddeo, D-Miami, and former Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried.
