TALLAHASEE, Fla. – The Transportation Expressway Authority Membership of Florida announced Monday the Middlesex Corportation as its 2024 Expressway Authority Project of the Year Award recipient.

“FTBA is proud to partner with TEAMFL to recognize the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Expressway Authority Project of the Year Award – The Middlesex Corporation,” Ananth Prasad of the Florida Transportation Builders’ Association said in a release.

The award is presented to “recognize the excellent contributions of construction contractors” in maintaining the state’s role as a leader in transportation.

According to the release, a study by the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority, or THEA, East Selmon PD&E led to the construction of slip ramps, which improved Selmon’s Expressway’s flow and safety. Additionally, THEA pinpointed an opportunity to improve service levels for drivers on the expressway by implementing slip ramps.

According to the release, the construction and design of the project began from I-75 onto the westbound Reversible Express Lanes, or REL, and westbound REL onto the local Expressway lanes just before the 22nd street off ramp.

Ramp 1 is located in Brandon, Florida while Ramp 2 is located in Tampa.

Among its details, construction of the slip ramps required the “widening of several bridges in very tight quarters.” The release noted Middlesex’s use of a Mi-Jack Rubber Tire Gantry Cane to help demolish, beam set, and substructure concrete pours to expedite the process and limit the impact on motorists.

In addition, Middlesex used H-pile foundations to install smaller equipment in tight areas around existing bridges. The foundations also were adaptable to various geotechnical conditions, among which minimized vibrations to the CSX track and soil disturbances in locations known for contaminated soil.

“Through this award, we strive to distinguish those who have and continue to do outstanding work in the transportation and infrastructure sphere, helping to shape and serve the future of Florida and its growing number of residents, and we believe this year’s recipient has achieved just that,” Prasad said.
