TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (FLV) – The Florida Attorney General’s office demanded correspondence from board members of the former Reedy Creek Improvement District after “shocking” contracts zipped through in the 11th hour in February.

Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office requested text messages and emails from board members and other Reedy Creek affiliates about circumventing or attempting to avoid the effects of anticipated actions by Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Legislature.

The governor’s office said there is “possible civil and criminal penalties” related to avoiding those anticipated actions.

The previous district board, hand-picked by Disney, quickly slipped through an agreement to give Disney 30-year vested rights and control over all development rights throughout the entire district.

The agreement was approved in early February just days before Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill to create a new District and strip Disney of its special privileges.

DeSantis appointed five new board members to oversee the new Central Florida Tourism Oversight District.

Lawyers for new district call Disney’s ‘overreaching’ agreement ‘unlawful’

The lawyers for the new district said in a statement that the development agreement “binds the hands” of the new board and “unlawfully” delegates the district’s legislative authority to a private corporation.

Walt Disney World said the agreements are “appropriate” and were “discussed and approved in open, noticed public forums” in compliance with Florida’s law.
