TALLAHASSEE (FLV) – Gov. Ron DeSantis was sworn in at the Florida Capitol on Tuesday, Jan. 3 for his second term.

“Freedom lives here in our great sunshine state of Florida,” he said in opening.

“When the world lost its mind, when common sense suddenly became an uncommon virtue, Florida was a refuge of sanity, a citadel of freedom for our fellow Americans and even for people around the world,” he said regarding the COVID-19 lockdowns.

“We choose to navigate the boisterous sea of liberty, rather than cower in the calm docks of despotism.”

DeSantis talked about his previous achievements from the last four years.

“Florida is leading the nation,” he said. DeSantis says Florida is number one in new business formations, tourism, economic freedom, education freedom, and parental involvement in education.

Despite the long list of achievements, DeSantis says Florida is far from done.

“Florida’s accumulated a record budget surplus and we need to enact record tax relief particularly for Florida families who are grappling with inflation.”

He also called for expanding parental rights, limiting the power of “partisan interest groups” and ensuring higher education focuses on “pursuit of truth” not “trendy ideologies”

In closing, he declared “We will be on our guard. We will stand firm in the faith. We will be courageous. We will be strong. And we thank God, and are proud to be citizens of the great, free State of Florida.”

DeSantis shared a photo from inauguration day four years ago beside a photo of this year.

“A lot can change in four years… but our commitment to freedom remains the same,” he tweeted.

During the ceremony, his cabinet members were sworn-in as well, including Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, Attorney General Ashley Moody, Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, and Commissioner of Agriculture-Elect Wilton Simpson.
