NEW YORK (FLV) – Conservatives are reacting to a report from NBC News detailing how the phrase “we’re coming for your children” has “been used for years at Pride events.”

The report comes after the release of a New York City video of drag marchers chanting “we’re coming for your children.”

“To conservative pundits, activists and lawmakers, the video confirmed the allegations they’ve levied in recent years that the LGBTQ community is ‘grooming’ children,” NBC said.

The “coming for your children” chant has been used for years at Pride events, according to longtime march attendees and gay rights activists, who said it’s one of many provocative expressions used to regain control of slurs against LGBTQ people. And in this case, they said, right-wing activists are jumping on a single video to weaponize an out-of-context remark to further stigmatize the queer community.

“So they’ve openly been pedophiles for years?” commentator Tim Young reacted.

“Is this actually a news story?” another said.

Twitter’s real-time community fact-checking system, Community Notes, responded by saying the phrase “coming for your children” is not a “historical part of Pride,” citing a report from the Post Millennial.

“Coming for your children” is not a historical part of Pride. The chant appears to originate from the San Francisco Gay Men’s choir singing a song with this title 2 years ago, in 2021. This article is thus a misrepresentation of Pride’s history.

Gov. Ron DeSantis reacted to the New York City video, slamming the chant at a campaign event in Hollis, New Hampshire Tuesday.

“I don’t know when this started, where the kids are now the target of a lot of this stuff. But I just think it’s fundamentally wrong,” he said.

“Some of you may have seen, it was some type of demonstration and they had, like, these drag queens [saying] ‘we’re coming for your Children,’” he continued.

“Let me tell you this. Adults, you know, they do… it’s a free country, right? […] [I just] mind my own business,” DeSantis said. “But you start coming for our kids? We’ve got problems. And we are gonna stand up for our kids.”

The comments come as part of a major aspect of his 2024 campaign theme, which involves being opposed to “woke” ideologies being imposed on children, notably sexual content and pornography, something Florida has cracked down on under DeSantis.

At a campaign event earlier this month in South Carolina, DeSantis made a similar remark to a protestor who called him a “fascist” when he brought up restricting sexual content in schools for young children.

Florida has gained notoriety in recent months for so-called “book bans,” which amount to restrictions on pornographic and sexual material in schools.

“There’s bad stuff that’s getting into the schools, there’s pornography that’s getting into the schools,” DeSantis said, before being interrupted. “So the parents have had to blow the whistle in Florida.”

“You’re a f—- fascist,” a protestor is heard saying as the governor paused.

“Yeah. Well, thank you,” DeSantis replied. “Thank you.”

As the crowd grumbled and the protestor was seemingly being pulled out, DeSantis opened up on the “enraged leftist” over trying to “impose an agenda” on children.

“We’re not going to let you impose an agenda on our kids!” he said.

“We’re going to stand up for our kids. We’re gonna make sure to do it right. That’s what we’re gonna do,” he said to loud crowd cheers.

“Those people like that in Florida are the people we beat every single day on policy. We do not let ’em win. We win all these battles. We’re not letting them indoctrinate our kids – not on our watch.”

Recently, a Florida court temporarily halted the enforcement of a new DeSantis-signed law cracking down on sexual live performances for children.

The judge said the new new law simply seeks to “suppress the speech of drag performers.”
