ALBANY, N.Y. (FLV) – New York Gov. Kathy Hochul reportedly proposed an eventual limit on gas stoves – while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis aims to make them tax-free.

In an attempt to improve air quality and lower emissions, Hochul proposed banning the new appliances for new homes beginning in 2025, and larger buildings in 2028.

The gas stoves are not the only fossil fuel-emitting equipment targeted: New York would also ban the sale of “fossil fuel heating equipment” by 2023 for smaller buildings and 2035 for larger ones.

If enacted, homeowners and property owners who need to replace those kinds of appliances and equipment past the allotted dates would need to upgrade their equipment rather than replace it.

“So, if a homeowner has now that needs to be replaced in January of 2030 they will not be permitted to be replaced by a natural gas boiler or an oil fire boiler or even a propane unit they will have to go through the course, and it is expensive more than $2,000 today’s prices to upgrade their heating system to some sort of electric appliance,” Bob Shea of ECR International said.

In contrast with New York, DeSantis’ proposed budget would make it easier to obtain gas stoves.

Part of DeSantis’ proposal would nix state taxes on the sale of the appliances.

“No tax permanently on gas stoves. They want your gas stove, and we’re not gonna let that happen […] It’s just the principle of, you know, this is ridiculous. And they do want to go after it,” DeSantis said. “They got blowback, so they kind of have to back off. They want to go after the gas stoves, and so, we’re saying we want you to be able to buy those.”
