TALLAHASSEE (FLV) – Democrat candidate for Governor Nikki Fried and her campaign promoted a fake email on Twitter that pretended to be Gov. Ron DeSantis’ campaign.

An email posing as the Gov. Ron DeSantis campaign asked people, “If I were to run for President will you support me?” DeSantis’ press secretary, Christina Pushaw, called out the Fried campaign for boosting the false information.

Nikki Fried’s communications director, Keith Edwards, tweeted the fake email.

“That’s an odd question to ask if you’re not planning on running for president,” Edwards’ tweet caption said. He later apologized and said it was a “scam.”

“I wonder if any Florida political reporters will ask @NikkiFriedFL why she amplified a fake email purporting to be from @RonDeSantisFL. If disinformation is such a threat to our democracy, that would be a fair question, right?” Pushaw said on Twitter

It’s unclear where the fake email originated from but it was promoted by The Lincoln Project. The Lincoln Project attempted to prevent Donald Trump from being re-elected in 2020.

Republican Governor Ron DeSantis is running for reelection and could face either Democrats Charlie Crist or Nikki Fried in the general election. DeSantis has a comfortable lead in the polls over both Democrat candidates.
