PARKLAND, Fla. – A resolution by Rep. Christine Hunschofsky, D-Parkland, would designate Feb. 14 as “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Memorial Day” in Florida.

“The events of February 14, 2024 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School forever changed the lives of the students, faculty, and staff who survived the massacre and their family members, the first responders who rushed to the scene, the health care workers who tended to the wounded, and all who
witnessed the carnage, and many more throughout the community,” the resolution read.

The shooting, which occurred on Valentine’s Day, killed 17 victims and injured 17 others.

The murderer, a former student, walked into the east side of Building 12 of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School at 2:19 p.m. The killer then pulled out and fired his semiautomatic rifle at 2:21 p.m., killing three students and wounding another.

A minute later, a 911 call was received from inside Building 12 to law enforcement in Coral Springs, Florida. The shooter preceded to fire rounds into classrooms and in the hallway in the following minutes.

After firing his last shot at 2:27 p.m., the murderer dropped 180 rounds of live ammunition onto the floor of the building. The killer then preceded to leave the school, blending in with a large group of students fleeing from campus.

The shooting lasted 6 minutes, according to the resolution.

“Out of the tragedy came hope in the scores of students who survived the attack and who joined together to make change and attempt to ensure that the events of February 14, 2018, will not be forgotten, and the several family members who chose to turn their pain into purpose by advocating for the enactment of laws, policies, and practices to make our schools safer,” the resolution added.
