TAMPA, Fla. – Hillsborough County resident Rico Smith, a Republican, announced his candidacy to take on House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell, D-Tampa, to represent District 67.

“This decision wasn’t easy,” Smith said. “But after deep conversations with my team and mentors, coupled with serious prayer, I’ve come to understand what’s best for the Republican Party and the people of Hillsborough County.”

“Firstly, after evaluating my platform and strong network of support, it became clear that my experience and abilities are ideally suited for the legislature,” he added.

He explained that his realization comes at a “pivotal time” for the district. A time in which people are “grappling with challenges” like inflation, soaring insurance premiums, failing infrastructure and growing concerns in education.

“Meanwhile, Representative Driskell seems more focused on virtue signaling and headline slogans,” he said. “That is not what we need when families are hurting.”

“We need tangible solutions, and that’s what my candidacy will bring. I am confident that I will bring the practical, meaningful change our district desperately needs,” Smith said.

Smith had previously ran for the Hillsborough County Commission, where he faced seven opponents.

Only one other Republican, Lisette Bonano, is running in the 2024 Republican primary for Driskell’s seat, according to the state. Bonano originally won the nomination for the position in 2022, losing to the incumbent Democratic leader by eight points.
