ORLANDO, Fla. – A special election for the interim District 5 Orlando City Commission seat will be held on May 21 following the suspension of Orlando City Commissioner Regina Hill.

Florida’s Voice previously reported on March 27, Hill was indicted on seven felony charges relating to alleged fraud of an elderly citizen.

FDLE Assistant Commissioner Lee Massie previously told reporters Hill “betrayed the trust of her community by taking advantage of a 96-year-old elderly citizen.”

On Monday, Mayor Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer held a meeting to approve a contract with the Orange County Supervisor of Elections to call the special election for the seat and set the qualifying period.

Dyer said a runoff election will be held June 18, if necessary. Early voting will take place from May 13 to May 19.

Candidates must be residents of District 5 for at least one year prior to the date of qualifying.

According to a press release, the person elected to fill the seat will begin serving when elected and until the criminal case involving Hill is resolved, or the term ends.

District 5 residents who are interested in running for the seat can find information here.
