TALLAHASSEE (FLV) – Republican state Rep. Tom Leek said he plans to run for Senate District 7 to add “Ron DeSantis conservatism” to the senate.

“I’ve so enjoyed the opportunity to work side-by-side with Governor DeSantis, that I want to carry that on and I want to take it to the senate,” Leek told Florida’s Voice.

“Travis Hutson’s terming out and I want to make sure that we carry on strong constitutional conservatism for the people of Northeast Florida.”

Leek currently represents House District 28 in Northeast Florida and is the Appropriations Committee Chair. State Sen. Travis Hutson, R-District 7, currently represents St. Johns, Putnam, Flagler and parts of Volusia county. Hutson is the current Senate Fiscal Policy Chair and serves on a variety of additional committees.

Most recently, Leek co-sponsored the sweeping property insurance legislation that aims to stabilize the insurance market. He oversaw reapportionment as he served as the chair of the House Redistricting Committee. Leek also was a chair of the Pandemics & Public Emergencies Committee.

“If we learned anything in the lockdowns, we’ve learned that you’ve got to protect people’s liberty,” he said. “You’ve got to protect their rights. I think thirdly, we’ve got to protect the people who protect us.”
