SANIBEL, Fla. (FLV) – As recovery efforts on Sanibel Island continue after Category 4 Hurricane Ian, the USPS announced a temporary office will open Monday, Feb. 6.

It will be located at 650 Tarpon Bay Road.

The office will be open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. It will offer retail services and Post Office Boxes, along with mail, package, and P.O. Box pickup.

The USPS said they are in the process of evaluating safe delivery points to determine where residential and mail delivery can be resumed.

Customers must pick up their mail at the temporary office until the operations are resumed. There will be signs directing customers to the office.

Until Feb. 6, customers had to travel to Fort Myers for mail and delivery.

“As a reminder, customers must show a picture ID when picking up mail and packages. We appreciate the patience of our customers as we continue to recover from Hurricane Ian and restore service as quickly as possible,” USPS said.

Residents were able to cross onto the island in October, a few weeks after the hurricane decimated Sanibel. The Sanibel Causeway reopened to the public well ahead of schedule.
