FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Three Florida cities were named in the top ten for best places for a summer job, according to a recent study.

Analyzed by WalletHub, the study found Orlando in fifth place, St. Petersburg in seventh place, and Fort Lauderdale in ninth place as three of the top spots for summer work. Tampa also placed just outside the top ten in eleventh place.

“It’s a great time to get a summer job, considering that a lot of places are still having labor shortages and may increase their compensation as a result,” WalletHub Analyst Cassandra Happe said. “In addition to good pay and good work conditions, the best cities for summer jobs also have attractive features like short commute times and fun activities to engage in outside of work.”

According to WalletHub, Orlando earned a total score of 56.20. The city specifically ranked ninth for youth job market and 13th for social environment and affordability. St. Petersburg also finished sixth for youth job market and 43rd for social environment and affordability for a total score of 55.13

The study also named Orlando as the best place for part-time openings for 18-24 year-olds per 1,000 people. The city has over 19 times the openings of New York City, which had the fewest.

In South Florida, Fort Lauderdale placed 13th for youth job market and 18th for social environment and affordability for a total score of 54.37.

For its findings, WalletHub reviewed more than 180 markets in the U.S. across 21 key metrics. The study specifically analyzed data ranging from median income of part-time workers, availability of summer jobs, and commuter-friendliness of jobs.

Columbia, Maryland was named the best place for students looking to make an extra buck. The city ranked first for youth job market and 33rd for social environment and affordability for a total score of 63.12.

Other cities in the top ten included Scottsdale, Arizona; Rapid City, South Dakota; Portland, Maine; South Burlington, Vermont; Charleston, South Carolina and Pearl City, Hawaii.

San Francisco, California also was named as the best place for social environment and affordability. Although, the city ranked 163rd for youth job market to finish in 84th place.

On the flip side, Laredo, Texas finished dead last for summer job openings in 182nd place. The city specifically received a 171st ranking in youth job market and 182nd mark for social environment and affordability.

New York also placed last for youth job market. Moreover, the city placed 31st in social environment and affordability to finish 170th overall.

Other cities lacking summer job opportunities included Memphis, Tennessee; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Moreno Valley, California; Jackson, Mississippi; Bridgeport, Connecticut; San Bernardino, California; Fontana, California; Riverside, California; and Lubbock, Texas.
