Uber announces free round-trip rides to some shelters ahead of anticipated major hurricane
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (FLV) – Uber announced free round-trip rides to Florida shelters in designated counties ahead of projected major Hurricane Idalia.
Uber will cover the cost up to $35 each way, similar to what the company has done with previous storms such as Hurricane Ian.
The free rides are for designated shelter locations in Hernando, Hillsborough, Leon Manatee, Pinellas Alachua, Citrus, Collier, Dixie, Lake, Marion, Nassau, Orange, Pasco, Polk, Sarasota, Sumter, Union and Volusia counties.

Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida officials have urged people to remain “vigilant” for any changes in the forecasted track. Hurricane Idalia is expected to first land in the state in the Big Bend area.

The state has linemen, fuel and rescue teams on standby following the storm, which as of Tuesday morning is expected to hit Florida Wednesday.
Tolls were also suspended by DeSantis Monday evening. The suspension began 4:00 a.m. ET Tuesday and will continue until Sep. 5 at noon.
