TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Funding of $57 million will be distributed for 23 statewide springs restoration projects, aiming to increase protection, increase spring flow and improve water quality.

The funding for the grants was passed through the General Appropriations from the legislature during the 2023 session.

The preservation of springs plays an “important role in the economic resilience of the state,” Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office said.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and four of Florida’s water management districts identified the projects.

The projects range from wastewater, stormwater, pollution control and water quality projects aiming to “protect and restore” the springs.

“Our local springs are vital resources to the state’s ecology, economy and quality of life,” said Brian Amrstrong, executive director of the Southwest Florida Water Management District.

Over $4 million will go to the Crystal River Wastewater Treatment Facility to benefit Crystal River and Kings Bay. The city’s wastewater treatment facility will be upgraded with the funding.

$3 million of the funding will go towards the Marion Silver Springs Shores Septic-to-Sewer project to benefit Silver Springs. This phase of the project includes decommissioning 212 septic tanks in the Silver Springs Shores community and installing sewer system expansion.

The Indian Springs Septic-to-Sewer Project will receive over $5 million. The Woodville Septic-to-Sewer Project will receive almost $5 million.

“In partnership with our water management districts, local governments and community leaders, implementation of these projects will help to continue the protection of this precious resource for generations to come,” Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Shawn Hamilton said.
