Charlie Crist’s Reported Running Mate Depicted Parents Attending School Board Meetings as Violent, Armed: ‘The Craziness is Real’
MIAMI (FLV) – Democrat candidate for governor Charlie Crist’s reported running mate, Karla Hernandez-Mats, previously tweeted a picture depicting residents and parents at school board meetings as violent and armed.
Hernandez-Mats is the president of United Teachers of Dade, which is a teachers union in Miami. She Tweeted a picture of various famous horror characters in costumes with chainsaws and blades saying they are “going to a school board meeting.”
The tweet is from October 21, 2021 with the hashtag “antivaxxers.”
“For any of you following the school board meetings, you know that the craziness is real,” Mats said. “God be with us.”
A month prior to that tweet, in September of 2021, the National School Boards Association sent a letter to President Joe Biden expressing concern over parents’ frustrations with lockdowns, school closures, mandates, and other hot-button issues that plagued schools coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The letter from the NSBA compared parents to “domestic terrorists.”
Crist has previously received support from the American Federation of Teachers. He praised the $500,000 donation from the teachers union. The union’s president is Randi Weingarten, who has said that making vaccines mandatory for students is something she supports.
Hernandez-Mats was the President of United Teachers of Dade in May of 2020, when Gov. Ron DeSantis lifted restrictions on all youth activities, including summer camps and organized sports. United Teachers of Dade criticized the governor’s decision.
In June of 2020, Governor DeSantis released recommendations for local communities as they plan to re-open schools. The governor wanted schools open by August of 2020 at “full capacity for traditional start of the academic year.”
In September of 2020, United Teachers of Dade Hernandez-Mats called it “premature” for Miami-Dade Schools to open.
“Trump’s rush to reopen schools and threats to defund our children are 100% political games,” she said. “We are simply demanding safety, in order to preserve public health and not lose more lives.”
In another September of 2020 tweet, Hernandez-Mats called the Florida Education Commissioner ignorant for wanting schools to reopen in Miami-Dade.
