TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (FLV) – As the 2023 regular legislative session approaches, Rep. John Snyder, R-Stuart, looks forward to “following” Gov. Ron DeSantis’ lead and continuing to “make America Florida.”

Florida’s Voice CEO Brendon Leslie asked Snyder if he feels there is competition between the chambers, now that Republicans hold the supermajority in both the Senate and the House. Watch the full video here.

Snyder said there’s “always a friendly competition” within the chambers, but at the “end of the day, it’s one team, one fight.”

“That’s where it’s incredible, just to see the unity, you know, amongst the Chamber’s understanding that yes, we are a system of checks and balances but when you agree on good, solid principles, it’s easy to really link arms and say, alright, how do we get this done? Let’s get it done for the people and just continue moving,” Snyder said.

Snyder reflected on some of the “pretty tremendous ground” covered during the special session, such as the legislation DeSantis signed to strip Disney of its control over its special district.

Snyder also reflected on the bill that continues a program to transport migrants to other states and sanctuary jurisdictions and said he was “proud to sponsor the bill.”

“What we’re doing under Governor DeSantis is working,” Snyder said.

Snyder said it’s “incredible” seeing DeSantis stand up “for personal liberty” and to have a part in “following his lead.”

“To see a governor that stands up for personal liberty, for limited government, and that he really puts his money where his mouth is, it’s incredible to be a part and to be able to, you know, be down in the trenches, following his lead. That’s why we’ve got to keep making America Florida,” Snyder said.

Florida’s Voice asked Snyder why he thinks voters continue to vote for Republicans over Democrats in the state.

Snyder said he thinks it comes down to “common sense.”

“When you continue to deliver, when you see an economy that is strong, when you see education ranks that are continuing to rise, when you see folks wanting to pick Florida out of every other place in the country to move, that’s how we know we’re doing the right thing and we’re just going to keep moving in that direction,” Snyder said.

He said legislators are “enjoying the benefits of having a supermajority” under Speaker of the House Paul Renner’s leadership.

“So I think we [Snyder and Renner] speak the same language that, you know, we’re about the mission, we believe in something bigger than ourselves and he [Renner] is a man of true principle and character,” Snyder said.

Snyder talked about some of his priorities he will be working on during the upcoming session including continuing to “fund students not systems,” reflecting on the school choice HB 1, and said he will be “putting tremendous amounts of energy into that.”

Snyder’s other priorities he touched on include continuing “to stand up for our Second Amendment rights,” and to make sure rates are affordable “in every area” such as insurance, the cost of goods and transportation, and the cost of health care.

He said he wants to have “transparency and accountability” when it comes to prescription drug costs.

“With the leadership we have here in the state, standby for an action packed session,” Snyder said.

Renner recently proposed constitutional carry legislation to allow Floridians to conceal carry a firearm without a permit. Florida’s Voice asked Snyder his thoughts on the bill and he said that it’s “one of those no-brainer issues” and said there’s “good support” of the bill within the chamber.

“When the Founding Fathers penned the Second Amendment, they for a reason did not say we’re going to have a government permission slip, be a part of that process,” Snyder said.
