BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. (FLV) – The Broward County School Board approved the superintendent employment contract for Dr. Peter B. Licata on Tuesday during a special meeting.

Licata served previously as the regional superintendent for the school district of Palm Beach County, the nation’s 10th largest school system.

He will receive a $350,000 salary with opportunity for a bonus of $10,000 starting with 2023-24 school year for achieving and continuing to maintain an “A” rated district.

“I appreciate the board immensely and I’m as excited as I’ve ever been. So I thank everybody in this room and I appreciate it and look forward to working with all of you,” Lacata said during the meeting.

Licata’s contract is slated to go through June 30, 2026.

According to the district, the selection followed a national search for candidates conducted by an independent firm, public surveys, focus groups, input from stakeholders, and public comments.

Other finalists included Dr. Sito Narcisse and Luis B. Solano. Licata is reportedly the only finalist living in Florida.

Licata holds a doctorate from Lynn University, a master’s in educational leadership from Barry University, and a bachelor’s from the University of Miami.

A member of the fifth cohort of the Future Chiefs leadership development program, Licata is also an adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, where he teaches courses to prepare future school administrators.

In January, Florida’s Voice reported Superintendent Vickie Cartwright was fired after a surprise motion during a school board meeting in November. Cartwright’s contract was originally planned to go through late 2024.

Broward County Public Schools is the 6th largest school district in the country.
