JACKSONVILLE (FLV) – Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis hosted a Mamas for DeSantis Regional Summit Monday to discuss highly-emphasized issues in the 2022 election including parental rights, freedom from lockdowns, and public safety.

DeSantis was joined by angel mom Kiyan Michael, a Republican candidate for the Florida State House in District 16. She is not facing a Democrat in November’s election. The summit was host to hundreds of moms and grandmothers in the audience.

“I joined some remarkable women at our St. Johns County Regional Mamas on a Mission Summit in Ponte Vedra Beach,” she said. “These mamas are the backbone of their families. Proud to stand with you all as we work to re-elect Governor [Ron DeSantis]!”

Michael was featured in a campaign ad for Gov. Ron DeSantis in September, telling her story of losing her son to a twice-deported illegal immigrant.

“And a twice-deported illegal ran into him and hit him so hard that he caused Brandon’s car to flip, and he killed him,” Michael said in the ad. “My child was killed by someone who should not have been here. This is what happens when we have open borders.”

After her son’s death, Michael met with the governor where she saw “the compassion in his eyes.”

“He wanted to make sure other lives were protected. And as a Governor, he truly has been upholding the oath that he took, which is to protect Floridians,” Michael said. “He not only talks a good talk, but he walks it.” She explained how the governor has been “very strong” on safety and law and order.

“He has made our state one of the safest states to be in,” she said. “There’s no greater leader than Governor DeSantis because he didn’t just listen. He put action behind it.”

The Florida governor endorsed Michael for State House over the summer. “Kiyan Michael is an Angel Mom, military spouse & lifelong Jacksonville resident,” he said. “Kiyan Michael has stood with me in the fight against illegal immigration & will be a leader in the FL House as we fight Biden’s open border policies. I am proud to endorse her candidacy for HD 16.”

Michael’s campaign website said her top priorities include combatting the ‘defund the police’ movement, supporting veterans, limiting federal overreach in the school systems, tackling illegal immigration, and protecting freedom.

The DeSantis campaign reiterated the governor’s immigration policies. He signed legislation to prohibit sanctuary cities in Florida and require local governments to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. The governor has taken a strong stance against open border policies at the southern border. In 2021, he sent state law enforcement to help secure the southern border.

Florida lawmakers approved legislation to increase sentences for fentanyl dealers, which the DeSantis Administration attributes to the southern border policies. The Florida Supreme Court also granted a petition in June for a statewide grand jury to examine international human smuggling networks.
