FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (FLV) – Dr. Peter Licata was sworn in as the next Broward County Public Schools superintendent Tuesday morning during the school board meeting.

Licata, taking over for outgoing Superintendent Vickie Cartwright, previously served as the regional superintendent for Palm Beach County.

Licata has already been on the job since July 11 after being approved by the school board.

Broward County is the sixth-largest school system in the United States and second-largest in Florida. He was officially sworn in by 17th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Elijah Williams.

“Mr. Lictata, I just wish to say two things to you. First off, I work on a regular basis with the school staff, the school employees, you’re going to be inheriting some of the most intelligent people that you have ever seen,” said Williams prior to Licata being sworn in. “You are very fortunate. I just want to say that to you.”

Licata will receive a $350,000 dollar base salary in his new role. He will also make an additional $10,000 bonus if the school district attains and maintains an “A” rating.

Licata’s future leadership and success could be a sigh of relief for the district after recent upheaval. Prior to Cartwright, Superintendent Robert Runcie resigned in the aftermath of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

“I know leadership when I see it,” Williams continued. “I just was just to say that you’ve got that. In fact, I’m looking forward to working with you and everyone else. So just thank you. Let us do this.”

Licata holds a doctorate from nearby Lynn University in Boca Raton. He also received a master’s in educational leadership from Barry University in Miami and a bachelor’s from the University of Miami.

The first day of school for Broward County is set for August 21st.
