TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In January, Florida environmental groups attended an event that featured a presentation urging human population control by a group that has handed out thousands of free condoms in support of its initiative.

Sources in attendance told Florida’s Voice that the group gave out condoms to attendees at the conference.

The Center for Biological Diversity, or CBD, put on the presentation about population control at the Everglades Coalition Conference, hosted by the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.

Florida’s Voice also learned that five South Florida Water Management District board members, and eight staffers, were in attendance.

Multiple Florida environmental groups were in attendance, including Captains for Clean Water, the Everglades Foundation and the Calusa Waterkeeper.

CBD has focused on raising awareness for “population growth’s threat to wildlife and the planet.” It has also sued the Trump administration 266 times.

Over the past several years, the group has given away several batches of 10,000 condoms aimed at raising such awareness, along with “highlighting the need for universal access to healthcare and education.”

The South Florida Water Management District was one of the top sponsors of the January event. It paid for a happy hour reception with the groups in attendance.

It’s also important to note that on top of CBD working with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in litigation, Conservancy also has six registered lobbyists with the South Florida Water Management District.

One of Conservancy’s top legislative priorities is additionally to outright ban any and all fracking and “fracking-like well stimulation techniques” statewide.

On top of all that, multiple groups in attendance of, and that sponsored the Everglades Coalition event support the Right to Clean Water amendment proposal.

Some of these include the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, Florida Oceanographic Society, Friends of the Everglades and Calusa Waterkeeper.

How can the South Florida Water Management District be part of hosting a happy hour at a liberal environmental organization’s headquarters, who is challenging the state’s 404 program and regularly challenges or lobbies permitting issues that come before the board?
