TALLAHASSEE (FLV) – North Florida Sheriffs and State Troopers endorsed Corey Simon in the State Senate District 3 race.

Eight sheriffs and Panhandle troopers represented by the Florida Association of State Troopers endorsed him.

“Now more than ever, North Floridians deserve leaders who will fight to protect our communities,” Lafayette County Sheriff Brian Lamb said. “I support Corey Simon because I know he will always have our backs.”

The following law enforcement sheriffs endorsed Simon:

  • Dixie County Sheriff Darby Butler
  • Gulf County Sheriff Mike Harrison
  • Lafayette County Sheriff Brian Lamb
  • Liberty County Sheriff Buddy Money
  • Madison County Sheriff David Harper
  • Suwannee County Sheriff Sam St. John
  • Taylor County Sheriff Wayne Padgett
  • Wakulla County Sheriff Jared Miller

“Corey Simon will fight to ensure North Florida law enforcement officers have the resources we need to keep your families and our neighborhoods safe,” said Wakulla County Sheriff Jared Miller.

Simon faces Democrat incumbent Loranne Ausley. Gadsden County Sheriff Morris Young endorsed Ausley for re-election this week.

Some Democrats have been under fire for sending out a campaign mailer depicting Simon and school children on shooting targets. The ad was paid for by the Florida Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, which City & State reports is led by Democrat State Sen. Lauren Book.

On one side of the mailer, it portrays Simon on a shooting target with bullets scattered underneath and next to a weapon. The back of the mailer shows two kids and a teacher on a shooting target with the words “don’t let extremists like Corey Simon turn our schools into shooting ranges.”

Republicans and two parents who lost children in the Parkland school shooting condemned the mailer.

“That basic call for humanity shouldn’t have to wait until after the election. Minority Leader Book should denounce this mailer and hold accountable those who are responsible for its disgusting content immediately,” State Sen. Kathleen Passidomo said.

State Senator Book defended the mailer in a press conference this week.

“The extreme GOP are the ones who put the targets on the backs of children,” Book said. “Let’s not feign how how over the top ridiculous a piece of mail is. Let’s talk about the policies that they want to bring forward that puts the targets on the backs of children and makes them unsafe.”
