SUITLAND, Md. (FLV) – According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Florida was the fastest growing state in 2022 while many blue states have seen significant population decreases.

The census revealed that the state of Florida had an annual population increase of 1.9 percent with a total resident population of 22,244,823 in 2022, “The first time since 1957 that Florida has been the state with the largest percent increase in population.”

Net migration was the largest contributing factor of change to Florida’s growth, adding 444,484 residents.

Florida’s rent prices have skyrocketed and Dr. Shelton Weeks, a Lucas Professor of Real Estate at Florida Gulf Coast University, said inflation and migration play a large role.

“The way that we handled COVID in Florida I think sent a signal to the rest of the country that many people saw as very favorable, whereas, some other states in areas maybe handled things very different,” Shelton explained. “And folks vote with their feet.”

Texas gained the largest number of people in the nation, increasing by more than 470,700 since July 2021, reaching a total population of 30,029,572.

New York saw the largest annual and numeric percentage population decline, decreasing by 180,341. Net domestic migration was the largest contributing factor to the decline which was -299,557.

California saw more than 343,200 leave the state which was more than any state in the country. Illinois saw more than 141,600 leave the state. Both states’ decline in population was largely due to net domestic outmigration.

The top ten states in percentage growth include Florida, Idaho, South Carolina, Texas, South Dakota, Monata, Delaware, Arizona, North Carolina and Utah.

The top ten states in percent decline this year include New York, Illinois, Louisiana, West Virginia, Hawaii, Oregon, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and California.
