BOWLING GREEN, Fla. – Gov. Ron DeSantis announced at a press conference Friday additional funding distribution for rural internet projects across Florida.

DeSantis said that of the funding, $135 million is coming from the state’s Broadband Opportunity Program and $86 million is from a federal government grant program.

The governor announced that in total, nearly $700 million has gone out to 63 of Florida’s 67 counties to fund 234 projects.

He said the money will help more than 27,000 houses, schools, businesses and other facilities. It will be distributed for 54 projects across 33 counties.

“Even though we took the lead on this and have used a lot of state resources, we are distributing some of these federal grants,” DeSantis said. “But what we’re running into is – federal government wants to put a lot of strings… they want to attach a lot of strings on this money.”

Rep. Kaylee Tuck, R-Lake Placid, attended the announcement, thanking the governor for the investment.

“The need for reliable broadband access has never been more prevalent, and the strain on rural communities like Hardee County has never been felt more than it is today,” she said. “This investment will be incredible for our area.”

Part of the funding includes $4 million for a Hardee County technology, economic development and workforce training hub project.

“Under Governor DeSantis’ leadership, Florida’s economy has grown at a persistent pace. Today’s strategic awards help maintain Florida’s forward momentum,” J. Alex Kelly, secretary of FloridaCommerce. “By connecting Floridians with centrally located community hubs, residents have increased access to find their next professional opportunity, upskill for future jobs and access telemedicine resources through a steady broadband internet connection.”

DeSantis also recently announced $226 million for rural broadband connection.
